FOR two consecutive Fridays in March, Chagford Primary and The Grove Primary School in Totnes will be hosting their own School Farmers Markets.

The markets will feature fresh, tasty goods from a range of local food producers as well as items grown by pupils in the school garden.

As part of their ongoing Food for Life Partnership work, pupils will take responsibility for organising the markets from start to finish.

By running a stall themselves and working hand-in-hand with local farmers and producers, they will learn both enterprise skills as well understanding more about the local food chain.

Any money raised from the event will go towards further farm visits and food education in the school.

Catherine Rees-Stephan, Headteacher at Chagford Primary added: "Staff and pupils at the school are looking forward to taking the opportunity to support local businesses by organising our very own school Farmers’ Market."

Helen Fernyhough, Year 5 teacher at The Grove Primary reiterated the sentiment saying: “Holding our market is a fantastic opportunity for the school and surrounding community. We’ve seen such enthusiasm from the pupils as they prepare for and learn about their market and food and farming.”

With the help of funding from Greater Dartmoor LEAF, Will Marcombe, Food for Life Partnership Farm Links Officer is supporting the schools with the markets. He commented: “These two schools have already learned a lot about farming, animal welfare, and food growing and cooking as part of their Food for Life Partnership Awards.

"Running these School Farmers Markets cements this knowledge and our experience shows both local producers and schools benefit from the collaborative working.”

The events are open to the public and will be held at Chagford Primary School on Friday 8th March, 3.30- 5pm and The Grove Primary, Totnes on Friday 15th March between 3pm and 5pm.
