Heavyweights from the world of music have backed a project to create a new venue in South Devon.

Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson has joined broadcaster "Whispering" Bob Harris as patrons of a scheme to transform an old industrial space in Totnes.

Donations have been flooding in to create the South Devon Arts Centre – an entertainment and exhibition venue, which will showcase new talent to up to 300 people.

Sir Richard, whose global empire began with humble roots, trading records from an old church crypt, said he was "delighted to support such a worthwhile project"

"There's so much talent out there and I am sure it will be a great support to artists and create a fabulous creative space for the local community," he added. Chairman of the project David Parsley would not confirm whether the mogul had dipped into his deep pockets to fund the new space.

However, he revealed that cash gifts of £20,000 and £4,500 had been received in recent weeks, pushing the total towards the target of £50,000 which is required to make the centre a reality.

Mr Parsley, said he had been "blown away" by the support.

"To have Sir Richard on board is incredible – it's amazing that he's willing to support us," her added

"As for 'Bob Harris, he's a living legend in broadcasting and the biggest supporter of new music in the country."

Mr Harris, now a BBC Radio 2 presenter, added: "It feels great to be a patron of a group that is so supportive of new and live music."

“I realised that ages ago Therapy - but thanks for tip.

I do enjoy watching him tie himself in knots as he attempts (which he sometimes does, bless him) to debate, and reverting to type as soon as he realises he has painted himself into a corner, or contradicted his own logic or argument, part troll and part pop-eyed shaking freak with obsessive-repulsive disorder.

But it really is mocking the afflicted and I should stop.”

    “Omni...

Haven't you realised yet. Asking Sidney for evidence to support anything he says is almost akin to asking the pope if he's got a spare condom you can borrow.”

“I have never sold drugs to children, nor to anyone else - so I have no idea of the profits involved, but I'll take your word for it.

I'm interested in your comment about "the left" finding virtue in selling drugs to children. I am totally shocked.

Can you please, please let me have some evidence to back that up - so that I can take up the issue with my member for parliament?”

“Yes omni, you can make a lot of money selling drugs to children, I'm a little surprised the left fnd that a virtue. Though the left do seem to have lost their way spectacularly in recent years.”

“I know Sidney - what a loser - he'll never achieve anything in his life will he!

Maybe you could give him some life-coaching?”
