Tributes have been paid to two young men who were killed when a convertible they were travelling in plunged into a swollen river last week.

Passenger Paul Bovey, aged 24, from South Molton and Martyn Windsor, aged 25, from Brixham, were found in the wreckage shortly after 8am on Friday, October 12.

It is thought the convertible blue Peugeot 306 may have crashed hours earlier at some time during Thursday night.

The men were travelling from the direction of North Molton when their car left an unclassified road which runs adjacent to the River Mole.

The car somehow left the road and fell 15 feet into the swollen river.

Both men worked at Tarr Farm Inn in Dulverton. A colleague said they were hard working, likeable young men.

She said: “Paul and Martyn were well liked, everyone got on with them. It’s all very raw and we are coming to terms with what has happened.

“Everyone is devastated, they will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to their families.”

Comments from friends on the Facebook pages RIP Martyn ‘Tree’ Windsor include: Suzi Fairey: “RIP darling. Still keep thinking that it’s all a lie and you are ok. Such a happy, smiling, kind lad. Just can’t belive you have been taken so soon.

“Your kind ways must have been needed up there to help others. See you again up there someday. Till then I know you will be up there watching down on everyone making sure we are all ok.”

Charlotte Stewart: “Rest in peace Mart you were such a character my thoughts are with your family.”

Emma Bowen: “I’ll never forget you. I’m so sorry.”

Messages on the page RIP Paul Bovey include: Andrew White: “Sleep tight up there mate. RIP, far too soon, brings a lot into perspective.”

Hilary Lester: “Words cannot express how we are all feeling. In such a short time you touched us all with your sense of humour, your zest for life and your infectious smile.

“I am honoured to have known you and privileged to have had you as a friend. Wish the world had more people like you in it. RIP Harry Mash, you true legend.”

Rachel Martin: “RIP Paul. Complete shock taken so young can’t believe it. Thoughts are with your family at this sad time.”

The road from South Molton to North Molton was closed until 5pm while specialist police accident investigators tried to establish how the accident happened.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who saw the car being driven in the area on Thursday evening or the early hours of Friday morning.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log number 148 of 12/10/2012.
