MEADFOOT Sea Road in Torquay was due to reopen this afternoon after having been closed when a large boulder slipped several feet down a cliff.

Torbay Council closed the road as a safety measure after the rock fall was reported to the council on Wednesday night.

This morning the boulder was being broken up and taken away in skips, and a council spokesman said the road was expected to reopen just after lunchtime.

A barrier of bags will be left in place to stop any remaining small rocks falling into the road.

Highways manager Patrick Carney said: "The boulder which is thought to weigh several tonnes became dislodged and slipped down the cliff towards the road, although it came to rest before it reached the road.

"Public safety is paramount, so we took an immediate decision to close the road as a precaution."
