Upsets all round in cup opener

FIVE Premier sides where knocked out in the first round of the Dennis Andrews Cup with some of the top teams among them.

Premier leaders St Anne's A failed to find their top form as they could not make up a 260-point disadvantage and lost two frames without the handicap as they went down by 132 points to Premier side Preston Cue F.

Lee McArthur scored a break of 40 in the final frame as Paignton Cons avoided a potential banana skin as they came from 200 points behind to beat second division Roundham B by 128 points.

Riley's A struggled to make up 255-point deficit as Torquay Squash D's Darren Atkins won the third frame by two points as the Squash side ran out winners by 122 points.

Brixham Sea Anglers A continued their good run of form as they beat First Division side Palace Place B by 89 points.

Mid Devon Cons A came from behind to beat Division One side Central Cons C by 50 points.

In an all-Premier tie, Preston Cue A came from 140 points behind to beat Upton Social A by 72 points.

Andy Hill scored a break of 51 in the fifth frame, but could not stop Dawlish Cons A losing by 37 points to Division One side Torquay Deaf A.

Brixham Cons A secured their first win of the season as they came from 115 points behind to beat Division Two side Kirkham Street A by 143 points.

Division One side Potc A held on to their 30 start do beat Premier strugglers Torquay Squash A by 73 points.

Division One side Paignton Cons A came from 45 points behind to beat Division Two outfit Brixham RBL A by 44 points.

Division One leaders Preston Cons A scraped through to the next round as they beat Teignmouth RBL A by 38 points despite the efforts of Teignmouth's Lee James, who won the final two frames to keep the scores tight.

Elliot Ambrose scored breaks of 33, 26 and 22 as Division Two side Preston Cue G continued their impressive run of form by coming from behind to beat Upton Social Club B by 107 points. Division One team Palace Place A overcame a 60-point handicap to beat Division Two strugglers St Marychurch Cons B by 94 points.

Division One side St Anne's B came from behind to beat Division Two side Preston Cue H by 130 points.

In an all-Division One tie, Torquay Squash C came from 15 points behind to beat Preston Cue E by 16 points in one of the closest matches of the first round.

THE Torbay RGB Snooker League annual meeting is being held at Central Conservative Club, Torquay on Monday, July 13 at 7.54pm.

There are some proposals already ranging from open cards, competitions being played over five frames in the early rounds, an increase to points being deducted for frames not played and the Premier League reverting back to original handicaps.
