It will take up to three gallons of hand-fed full-fat milk a day to build this baby boy up.

The giraffe was born on Valentine's Day at Paignton Zoo and will be reared by staff after his mother failed to bond with him.

The as-yet unnamed rare Rothschild giraffe needs fattening-up and will need a lot of gold-top milk over the next few months.

Rothschild giraffes are classified as endangered.

Matthew Webb, senior head keeper of mammals at the Devon attraction, said: "He bonded with his mother, Janica, but she did not bond with him. "It is a bit of a surprise, as she has successfully reared a calf before."

The zoo is a registered charity and is looking for companies to donate milk.

Mr Webb said: "We will need between seven and 14 litres of gold-top milk each day.

"He could take in 10 to 20 per cent of his body weight a day and put on 10 kilos a week.

"He is currently 70kg (154lb) but as his weight increases so will his milk requirements.

"If any company out there would like to donate milk to him for the six months I think he would really appreciate it.

"He will be fed four times a day once we get going, but it's every two to four hours at the moment."

Mr Webb said the calf could need milk for up to nine months, but said staff will start weaning him when he is around five to six months.

The baby was born just weeks after another newborn giraffe died at the zoo.
