TOTNES singer-songwriter Ben Howard has been shortlisted for one of the biggest prizes in music.

Howard is on the shortlist for the 2012 Barclaycard Mercury Prize for the best albums of the year.

The prize provides a snapshot of the year in music, recognising artistic achievement across a range of genres.

Howard has been nominated for his debut album Every Kingdom, which was part-recorded by the 25-year-old in his home county.

Born in London, he moved to Totnes as a child and went to school at KEVICC in Totnes and at Torquay Boys Grammar School.

His top 10 gold selling album was released in October 2011 on Island Records and includes the singles The Wolves and Only Love.

One critic described it as a collection of 'intriguing tales from a modern troubadour – emotionally charged and involving music'.

This year will see the Prize introduce a new series of exclusive one-off gigs featuring the shortlisted artists being held ahead of the Awards Show on November 1.

The overall winner of the 2012 Prize will be announced at the Barclaycard Mercury Prize Awards Show at the Roundhouse on November 1.

Bookies William Hill have made Plan B and Richard Hawley joint 4/1 favourites. Ben Howard is currently 8/1.
