VANDAL-PLAGUED public toilets have been attacked again, just weeks after undergoing an £80,000 revamp designed to make them vandal-proof.

Now desperate Kingsbridge councillors say they are 'determined to clamp down on the mindless morons'.

They are looking at setting up a spy camera covering the quayside toilet's doors to monitor who goes in and out of the loos.

Meanwhile the district council owners have been forced to close the toilets at night to try to halve the vandal attacks.

Police are investigating the latest attacks on the toilets after someone damaged an electricity box, sprayed obscene graffiti over a wall and wrecked baby-changing facilities in the ladies' toilet over the Easter weekend.

Then last week someone ripped an armrest from the disabled toilet and threw it into the estuary.

Mayor of Kingsbridge, Rufus Gilbert, said: "Enough is enough. I am determined to clamp down on the mindless morons who commit such wanton acts of vandalism across the town, but it will take a commitment from all of us to stand up and be counted.

"Public toilets are important to local people and to visitors alike. However, we cannot justify continuing to spend money at the same location only for vandals to carry on causing damage.

"I would urge anyone who witnesses an act of deliberate damage or notices someone behaving suspiciously to contact the police immediately."

The toilets were only reopened a fortnight ago after South Hams Council spent £80,000 on revamping the loos which included installing vandal-proof facilities and moving the entrances to make them more visible.

Mr Gilbert said the town is looking at setting up a CCTV camera which will cover the doors to the toilets.

The town council is aiming to apply for planning permission for a pole to be set up in the market square area to carry the camera while South Hams Council will be funding the camera itself, revealed Mr Gilbert.

At the same time the town council is setting up a volunteer team to monitor the town's CCTV coverage from a control room in Quay House. A similar volunteer scheme is operated in Exmouth.

Vandals have been targeting the quayside toilets in Kingsbridge for well over year. Human excrement has been smeared over the walls and floor, door locks damaged, windows smashed and toilets blocked with drink cans.

Since the revamp the toilets have been open 24 hours a day but now the council is locking them once again at 6pm.

Chris Lucas, head of the district council's environment services, said: "We are working closely with the police to try to stop this anti-social behaviour and hope the toilets can be reopened for the summer."

“Vandel proof toilets is an interesting thought. Any person with enough time on their hands to stand in a toilet a rip it apart has a very serious mental problem, apart from a few non public toilets I personally wouldn't want to spend a second more than I had to in any loo. Mind you we have to be fair, there is the possibility that they are not vandels but some one with a severe bowl problem that reduces them to some form of mania !”
