Veteran sportsman dies at 89

ONE of South Devon's most durable sportsmen has died aged 89.

Cricketer, hockey player, golfer and bridge enthusiast Gordon Baker died in a Torquay nursing home.

Baker was associated with Torquay CC for almost 60 years, Torbay HC for almost as long and was a playing member of Torquay GC from 1963 to 2009.

He started playing cricket at Torquay in 1955 and when he finished playing in the 1990s he took up umpiring.

Baker served as treasurer of the cricket club for many years and was awarded life membership for his services.

His hockey career on the win continued into his late 50s.

Other sporting interests included rugby. Baker was a member of Torquay Athletic, who are planning a minute's silence before their games this weekend.

His funeral will take place on Wednesday, November 28 at Torquay Crematorium at 11.15am.
