Vibrant oil pastels offer artist a sense of immediacy

Artist, Nicholas Dolphin, who divides his time between Totnes and Banff in Scotland, will be holding an exhibition of his paintings at Birdwood House from tomorrow.
"My paintings are a form of personal meditation and pleasure," he says.
"I recognise that my work crosses boundaries between the physical and mental, real and unreal, material and imaginal, exploring the boundary between the seen and the unseen, and I am always intrigued by the many different interpretations people make of them."

Nicholas started to use oil pastels when his son was born 30 years ago, although he had started painting before going to Brighton Art College in the mid 1960s.
"With no time to get out the oils or watercolours, I came to enjoy the vibrancy of oil pastels," he says. " I like the discipline of once a line is made on the paper, it cannot be changed; this captures and maintains the immediacy of the moment.
"I began to paint local and inter-planetary landscapes, dreamscapes and imaginal journeys, as well as portraits, not always knowing what would appear before my eyes."
