STOKE Gabriel Wassail on Saturday combines ancient ceremony with a glorious mid-winter folk festival of Morris dancing, mummers players, storytelling, folk music and local home-made food and drink.

As you would expect, there will be plenty of local apple juice and mulled cider.

The mid-winter folk festival will be held in the atmospheric surroundings of Church Walk in the heart of the village with the Wassail ceremony taking place in the community orchard.

There will also be fish and chips from Emma’s Tea Rooms, face painting for children and the sale of toffee apples and cakes too.

Stoke Gabriel Wassail begins with a magical lantern procession through the community orchard led by children from the village primary school through the community orchard. This year’s Wassail King and Queen are Year 6 pupils at Stoke Gabriel Primary School, Freddie Gillmore and Lucy Kies.

Entertainment is provided by the Newton Bushel Morris Dancers and the Bovey Tracey Mummers Players. It starts at 4pm.

THERE’S still time to see South With Scott — A Centenary Exhibition at Torquay Museum. It celebrates Captain Scott’s renowned expedition to the Antarctic 100 years after he reached the South Pole, and explore the expedition’s Devon Connections.

Scott and four of his comrades died with the Terra Nova expedition of 1910-1913.

Captain Robert Scott was born near Plymouth and expedition member Frank Browning lived in Torquay.

Scott’s relatives still live in Torbay. The exhibition runs until April 8.
