Weight-loss goal for deputy mayor
DEPUTY Torbay mayor Dave Thomas has pledged to lose a total of two stone in weight for loveLIFE.
And he has pledged to help others lose pounds.
Cllr Thomas said: "I think it's a fantastic campaign and I'd like to encourage others to become involved.
"Councillors can set a good example. I took a Royal Society of Public Health certificate on healthy living. If you want to stop smoking, lose some weight or stop drinking I can show you to where to get help.
"I know it has got to feel it is the right time for you to do something about your health for you to succeed."
Cllr Thomas lost a lot of weight during a period of serious ill health, and says following that he found for the first time in his life he could eat what he liked without putting weight on.
"I was in hospital for seven months in 2010 and then went back in for another operation in 2011 and I lost a massive amount of weight.
"I needed then to put some weight on. After being ill for all that time it seemed I could eat anything and everything and wasn't putting a pound on.
"I thought that was great after always having to watch my weight since being a young lad.
"But then something kind of flicked and I started putting weight on and didn't notice.
"But then I realised I was, and joining the high-profile loveLIFE campaign is a great way for me to step up to the mark and pledge to lose the weight and keep it off during the year.
"I have also started tweeting about it as well, so people can follow me at @cllrdavethomas.
"I want to try to make a positive impact, not just for myself but for other people by putting myself in the public eye.
"I would love to be involved in a group of people who want to lose weight and can pledge the weight lost.
"I would be more than happy to be a figurehead for it."

“Dave you would be very welcome at any Slimming World group in the area where you would receive fantastic help and support to lose weight with others with the same aim and find out how you can stay healthy for life. We have day groups and evening groups in the Torbay area, all Consultants were members in the group so they fully understand the psychological and practical barriers to slimming and have the tools to help you achieve your dream.”
