JON Whiley beat Nigel Wilson in two games, but not by much to win the Pavey Group Handicap at Torquay.

Three weekends of competition culminated in two finals in the same night.

Wilson and Whiley are very competitive so it called for a scratch match with both players starting on zero.

Fifty is a long way away from zero, so both players had to play strategically.

It went down to the wire in the first before Whiley scraped through 50-47.

The second was also close and it was the same score line again in favour of Whiley, giving him the championship 2-0.

Earlier, Luke Tanner and John Downer had contested the final of the plate.

Downer started on 33 up to 50 with Tanner starting on 0. Both players produced some great squash and Downer was showing off his pace, which provided plenty of excitement for the crowd.

It was Tanner who eventually came through the winner of a hard-fought match to claim the title.

Malcolm Swift, managing director of Pavey Group Financial Services, performed the presentations.

TORQUAY One travelled to Devon and Exeter to face relegation bound Devon and Exeter Three. Torquay were without captain Stu Perrett and in-form Ian Bransdon so in came Luke Tanner.

Tanner went on first against Andy Maker. Tanner is Torquay Thirds' number one in Division One and this step up a division seemed too much for him. Maker won in three 11-5, 11-7 and 11-7.

Jason Yeo came back from a game down at string three against Louis Robjant. Yeo eventually came through comfortably in four.

Andy Robb made no mistake in his match at string four against Steve Rickard. Robb won well in three, 11-7, 11-5 and 11-6.

Steve Lewis was on for Torquay at string two against step-in Ty Festa. This was one-sided from start to finish as Lewis picked up a 3-0 win.

Despite being ill, Dave Palmer barely had to do anything in his string one match.

Will Ingram was his opponent who had to go up the order and was no match for Torquay's county player.

Another 3-0 win for the away side gave them a 17-4 victory overall.
