Wood scores four in Sharks' blitz
DEVON Sharks won 28-16 on their first trip to Weymouth to meet South West Conference newcomers Dorset Giants.
Sharks started the match with a try from James Wood two minutes after kick off.
A great break by Barry Whittle, followed by a run from Rory Williams, led to a second Wood try.
Player-coach Matt Jackson converted.
After the Giants tried to breakthrough on the counterattack and failed, Jackson stole in for a try that made it 14-0 with 15 minutes gone.
Wood ran threequaarters of the length of the pitch for a try that Jackson converted for a 20-point lead that suggested a landslide was on the cards. It wasn't.
The Giants upped their game and were making life hard for the Sharks when play was halted when one of the home players went down with a suspected neck injury.
The break gave an opportunity for the Giants to gather their thoughts and came back for the second half eager to narrow the gap.
After Dan Taylor went close for the Sharks, the Giants kicked clear and scored on the end of a strong attack. The conversion made it 6-20.
Sharks answered with a try from captain Phil Maddick, followed by a deserved try for Rory Williams to make it 28-6.
There was a flurry of activity in the latter stages with Sharks scoring twice and – Marshall and Wood – and the Giants answering.
The Sharks were wearing their new sponsored kit for the first time. The sponsors were 100% health of Hyde Road Paignton who have agreed a two-year deal offering a package including nutritional advice for playing members.
