Woodland burial for ex-ELO musician Mike Edwards
FORMER Electric Light Orchestra rocker Mike Edwards is being laid to rest with a musical celebration and a woodland burial.
The 62-year-old musician was killed near Halwell a fortnight ago in a freak road collision with a bale of hay.
His funeral is due to take place on Wednesday at a woodland burial site near Rattery.
It is planned to hold a form of service in Rattery Village Hall before the burial.
Afterwards there will be a 'wake' at the village hall with tea and scones and an evening of music making in Mr Edwards' memory.
Friend and former partner Colette Hurley said the funeral was being arranged by Totnes-based Green Fuse funeral directors who arrange non-mainstream services.
She said many of Mr Edwards' friends would be coming to the village hall for the 'service'.
Mr Edwards, who lived in Smithfields, Totnes, was a member of the chart topping ELO group in the early 1970s.
He was crushed to death when a runaway six hundredweight bale of hay rolled over a hedge and dropped 12 feet onto the cab of the van he was driving.
He had lived in the Totnes area for the last 20 years and was heavily involved in the music scene.
He was a founder member of Devon Baroque and was involved with other early music groups.
He also taught the cello, giving lessons at his home.
