"Having worked myself on the bid and pre-construction stages of the contract for three years, I also find it really satisfying to see real works taking place even though they are very minor at this stage."

Torbay mayor Gordon Oliver said: "I'm pleased construction work has started. It is a key milestone and moves us one step closer to the new road, which will improve the future prosperity of Torbay."

Work on the bypass is due to be completed by December 2015.

“Rule number 1 of road traffic management: creating more roads never eases congestion, it just brings more vehicles onto the road to fill the increased space. M25, M11, M1 .... they were all built to ease congestion, they're all congested. The only way to ease congestion is to reduce the levels of traffic.”

“Waiting in the usual traffic jam for it to be completed, is going to be even more frustrating now that they have started digging.
