Work on £12m scheme forces Torquay's Rock Walk footpath to close
A TORQUAY seafront footpath has been closed due to demolition work at the nearby Palm Court site.
The path which runs from Shedden Hill Road up to Rock Walk was closed last week for safety reasons.
Developers Harvard Tisdale have put together the £12million scheme to transform the former Palm Court Hotel into a mix of holiday apartments, restaurants and private luxury flats which will be called Abbey Crescent.
Contractors Mansell have been carrying out demolition works since the summer. It is not known how long the path will remain shut to the public.
A spokesman for Mansell said it had been closed by the council's highways department and they could not comment further.
A Torbay Council spokesman said the path had been closed for safety reasons due to the work taking place below the path, but they did not know how long it would stay shut for.
She said: "It is dependant on the work being carried out by the contractors and once we are happy the work doesn't pose a risk to anybody anymore it can reopen. We are unsure when this will be."
Harvard Tisdale has already said demolition has been a slow process because of the challenges of a 'busy town centre site next to a main road'.
They are in the process of resolving the party wall issue with a neighbouring owner and until the party wall process was completed they have been limited in the demolition they could carry out.
