Work to start on new Totnes library
Construction work to create a new library in Totnes will start next week.
Construction company Ian Williams have been appointed to undertake the redevelopment, which involves creating a large library, twice the size of the existing one, in the town’s Mansion building.
The move means residents will be able to conveniently access a greater variety of services under one roof as The Mansion is already home to the Council’s Adult and Community Learning Service.
The new library will be fitted with the latest equipment and technologies such as self service machines, wifi and public access computers.

The additional space also means the new library will be able to stock a larger selection of books, audio books, DVDs and CDs as well as offer a larger children’s area, a designated teenage area and a quiet reading and study area.
Spaces including comfortable seating where families can share books together as well as room for public access PCs and flexible areas for activities and events will be available for the whole community to enjoy.
Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Libraries, said:
“It has been a longstanding aspiration to provide a new library in Totnes that meets the changing local need and provides a suitable space for 21st century information and learning, so I am really pleased that construction work is starting and that dream will soon be realised.
“This project will not only provide a flexible and modern library facility for the town, but will also reinvigorate The Mansion, which is part of the fabric of Totnes and a real community asset, as a vibrant community space at the heart of Totnes, which is excellent.
“I am looking forward to the new library opening in the Spring.”
Residents and the Friends of Totnes Library Group been heavily involved in helping the Council make sure the extra space is used well, and are keen to see the library offer more events and activities in the library, such as storytellers, art activities, reading groups and visiting authors, and they wont have long to wait as a programme of opening events to showcase what the new library has to offer is being planned.
Jean Holder, who chairs the Friends of Totnes Library Group, said: "Totnes has had to wait a long while for the library it deserves, and we hope and trust the development at The Mansion will live up to all our expectations, the friends of the library look forward to helping wherever there is a need, and are delighted to know that work will commence next week.”
