SHALDON'S Ian Lesley is heading for the National finals at Worthing after his rink of Ted Collins, John Pearce and Ian Foster caused a big upset by beating the highly-fancied rink of Sam Tolchard (Kings) 18-17 in the DCBA section finals of the fours at Bitton Park.

Tolchard's Commonwealth Games training had allowed him to play in just one match of the section finals but upon his return he linked up with clubmates Phil Hackett, Craig Down and Adrian O'Neill to beat semi-final opponent Ian Bond (Crediton).

In the final, Tolchard appeared to have a winning hand when he was holding the two for victory till Lesley bowled down around the head and flicked the jack to save a shot. Tolchard was still holding one, but it was not enough to deny Lesley whose number two John Pearce had a fine game.

It was a result that completed the final piece in the jigsaw with all other DCBA qualifiers for Worthing already known.

IN THE Ivor Doble West Country Summer League, South Hams Foxes beat Torquay United Cygnets 50-43 (5-2pts) with South Hams Vixens edging out Plymouth Drakes 34-33 (5-2pts). Kingsley Panthers still hold on to top spot.
