Year ahead at first mayor's forum
MAYOR Gordon Oliver is to outline his vision for Torbay's future at a public briefing.
The event at the Riviera International Conference Centre will be the first such briefing by the mayor, and will be open to all.
He will outline on Wednesday, February 29, the proposals of his new events forum, including a major cycling event, the changes which have taken place over the past nine months since his election and plans for the next 12 to 18 months.
Among the projects expected to be highlighted are the work on the Torquay promenade, the go ahead to negotiate a lease for the Torquay Pavilion scheme, new palm trees planted on Torquay seafront, progress on the White Rock business park and housing estate and Oldway Mansion.
The work of the events forum will be reported and its aim to make Torbay the events capital of the South West.
Proposals are being drawn up for events to mark the Olympics with the torch's procession through the Bay, and for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
There are also plans for a major cycling race and rugby festival in the pipeline.
The details of the mayor's proposed £60,000 television advertising campaign for tourism and business will be outlined. The campaign is expected to take place in March.
There will also be an update on the work of the English Riviera Tourism Company, including its new website and English Riviera app for smartphones.
The event will run from 11am to 1pm in the Rosetor room.

“Scrap the council, we can empty our own bins once every two weeks (what else do most people get), and spend the money we save on the police force. We don't need council planning, we need law and order in Torquay.”

“Stand on the steps of Torquay Town Hall and look at Torquay. The first thing you will see are benches full of druggie dossers from Factory Row, look a bit further and you will see unemployed drunks outside the 'hassle' pub, a queue for benefits at the job centre and connections, sex offenders booking in for the night at the Leonard Stocks centre. If Torbay Council can't get things right on their own doorstep what hope is there for the rest of the bay.”
