Yes, Devon is the best place to live, says mayor
MAYOR Nick Bye has welcomed a poll that revealed Devon has retained its position as the best county to live in.
It topped Country Life magazine's poll for the second time in a row —the last time the publication ran its survey was in 2003.
-

Mr Bye said: "This is fantastic news but hasn't really come as a huge surprise. It just confirms what we already know — that Devon, and in particular Torbay, is a wonderful place to live."
He added: "We are extremely lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful scenery and an amazing built heritage with stunning architecture and a history which attracts people from all over the world.
"Our links to Agatha Christie, the recent multi-million pound refurbishment of Torre Abbey, our record number of Blue Flag beaches and our recent Geopark status as well as attractions such as Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts and Kents Cavern all help to make Torbay a thriving, great place to live.
"That said, it is the residents who really make a place and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else."
Cornwall, which was a runner-up six years ago, could only muster seventh place this time around.
But its superior neighbour was well and truly top of the pile after scooping more points than its rivals in 19 different categories.
It was deemed to have the best landscape, heritage, pubs, food and 'green' elements.
The green and pleasant treasure also boasts the highest number of farm shops and local butchers together with the best recycling rate and unmatched environmental credentials.
Country Life's editor-at-large Clive Aslet said: "Few counties can match the variety that Devon manages to pack into its 2,589 square miles."
He added: "You can take Devon warm, sitting around a log fire drinking scrumpy, or take it wild, as Sherlock Holmes discovered when he camped out on Dartmoor investigating a certain hound."
Country Life collected its data from government departments, the Good Pub Guide, the Exeter-based Met Office and countryside organisations.

“I moved down here from the South East a number of years ago, and the only thing I don't like about the place is the way that people in the South West are RIPPED OFF, both by miserly employers who pay bottom dollar for just about any job and water companies who charge extortionate amounts for the provision of a basic necessity. There isn't a shortage of housing, there is a shortage of AFFORDABLE housing which is due to local people being far too poorly payed to afford a place of their own. Simply trying to flood the market with "Entry level" accommodation will not bring prices down - perhaps we should concentrate on stemming the "Brain Drain" of gifted young people from Devon by upping salaries.”

“Paul, I understand what your saying, but moving away is not the answer and I would never suggest you do, but as with the person who signs themselves HOVE, it's not all rosy. If enough people in this town speak up logically change can happen. You don't nesscessarily have to change the leaders, just change the thinking. When it comes to politics there is little difference between any of the parties, whatever propaganda they care to spout. It is the voice of the peole that get change, and shouting the other fellow down does not do it, we can be a stubborn lot us British. Sadly the class system does come into it, you think Torquay is bad, experience the class system in Brighton, supposedly a very liberal thinking town, that would really amaze you.”

“Oh the reason for my apology, I assumed you were male because I credit women with more basic common sense than is displayed in your comments, and i'm truelly not being patronising, you see you need to know me, and then you would know where i'm coming from, why and where I get my facts. But then again you demonstrate you wear blinkers, so unattractive.”

“I must make an apology, not knowing your name I assumed you were male, Sorry. But I give you a task so you can do some research on Brighton & Hove.
!. Find out how many people died of AIDS in the area over the last 25 years, who would have died in squallar if it had not been for people like Brighton cares.
2. Find out how many students dropped out of Sussex and Brighton University's in the first year.
3.Find out how many people are suffering from and have died through drug abuse and only got little help except from the charities
4. Find out how many people died of neglect
5. Find out how many people contracted MRSA, and how many died, in the local hospital.
But get the exact figures, when your nmot enjoying the vibrancy, if you can, then try and use your assumed morals on me. I knew Brighton and Hove when it really was vibrant. It's not even 10% of that now, nothing to do with the 'good old days', pure and simple FACTS”

“Well now Mr Hove, you really don't have the facts. Of course you have every right to your opinion, I did not say you didn't. Me, Well that is my name and I not ashamed for people to know it, Middle class, no, I have educated myself,But I don't have any class status, and am opposed to such thing. My dad was a postman all his life. I am not married, i'm not 'little, at 6'0" and 17.5 stone not possible, regretably, but I am very fit, physically and mentally. But hey I'm a very ordinary guy who lives now on a state pension, by force of circumstances, all very confirmable. But before I write to newspapers or any other bodies I do do my research, I would recommend you do the same and then, just then, you might have a justifiable reason to be offensive. The vibrancy you talk about is very superficial. You'll change your mind, I would love to be living back in Brighton and Hove but that is no longer an option. Do your research and get your facts right. All that glisteres is not gold”

“Neither did I even say that Brighton or Hove was NOT filled with crack heads and down and outs... I said that it was however filled with vibrancy...
My particular job, allows me too see the streets for exactly what they are.
I would not personally go attacking people you don't know over a website.”

“Yes I can see that Brighton and Hove is not the best place for drop outs but per 1000 households I think you will see that Torbay has more homeless than Brighton... Go away you middle-class no it all... No one elses opinion is valid but yours obviously... And thats exactly what it was MY OPINION! How dare you comment on just that...
Im a lady brain-cell... My name reffered to Nick Bye...”

“Oh Mr Hove, I lived in Brighton and the surrounding areas for probably more years than you have been on this earth. I actually am very fond of the place, ut you need to remove yoour obviously very dark rose tinted glasses, Brighton is swamped with drop outs, dead beats, crackheads and drug addicts, go down into Churchill Square car park late at night. The streets of the town have never been so dirty, and as for class distinction, wait until you have lived there a while. If your going to make remarks and comments do your research first, don't shoot from the lip. A lot more methane and 'backslapping' propaganda has come out of Brighton & Hove Council than probably any other place. Get your facts right.”
