Five instruments, three voices. All real.
Well, that wasn't quite the case at the Exeter Cavern, the last gig of Night by Night's first full UK tour.
The band was down to two voices, with their lead singer, Dan Rossall, unable to be there, due to illness.
However, Night by Night's second time in Exeter was as close to perfection as any fan could have asked.
Despite having to play as a four-piece, with Ben Christo (the Sisters of Mercy) as lead singer, their performance was brilliant, they sounded absolutely professional, tight, note-perfect.
During the first song I knew this show would be something awesome. And so it was.
Night by Night's music is a mix of heavy guitars, amazing solos, melodic and intense choruses, all pulled together with some of the most beautiful vocal harmonies I've come across in a while.
This is music which is going to get bigger live crowds going mental. They really claimed the small stage at the Cavern and used it for their advantage – their concert was not just about music – they are born performers, a pleasure to watch and they know exactly how to connect with the audience.
Playing for just about an hour, with a successfully balanced set of old and new material, including The Moment, Can't Walk Away and Time to Escape, they delivered a faultless performance, absolutely rocked the place and left all their fans hungry for more.
Night by Night have a promising year ahead of them judging by the band members' dedication and the quality of their new material.
It was inspiring to see such a down-to-earth band play in front of an enthusiastic audience, making them sing along to their melodic choruses. You could feel the band connecting with the audience.
I will definitely go to see Night by Night the next time they come to town – and I advise everyone who has the slightest interest in music, or just wanting to have a good experience, to do the same. This is a band worth watching.
