Torquay Boys’ Grammar School has seen its share of success stories since its beginnings over a century ago. Locally well known would be Adrian Sanders, the current Liberal Democrat MP for Torbay since 1997 and Bill Lucas, a rower who reached fifth place in the double sculls finals at this year's London Olympics.

More nationally known is the cricketer Chris Read, a wicket keeper for the England team and Chris Lintott, co-presenter of the BBC's The Sky at Night.

Ben Howard, who attended for a short time, is a folk singer-songwriter, with one album, Every Kingdom, out, and is on the verge of huge fame, already touring at major festivals worldwide and appearing on Later… With Jools Holland.

Another famous face, although perhaps not as well known, is David Southwood, the current President of the Royal Astronomical Society and the former Director of Science and Robotic Exploration at the European Space Agency.

Perhaps the most successful, although almost unheard of, is the nine times Oscar-nominated Hollywood cinematographer Roger Deakins, famous for work on The Shawshank Redemption, A Beautiful Mind, The Big Lebowski and many others including Skyfall.
