UNPAID carers in Torbay enjoyed some well-deserved fun and relaxation.

Special events were put on to mark Carers' Week and by Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust and supported by local businesses, churches and community groups, more than 400 local carers took some time out to enjoy various events throughout the week.

This year, more than 15 events took place across the Bay, with an emphasis on carers having some time for themselves.

The events ranged from belly dancing and fishing to massage and manicures — all aimed at promoting the wellbeing of carers and recognising the vital role they play in our community.

Natalie Townsend, Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care Trust's carer services coordinator, said: "It was wonderful to see so many carers relaxing and enjoying a day out, it is so important that we recognise our unpaid carers and provide them with opportunities to take time-out from the support they provide."

MP Adrian Sanders, who attended a cream tea event at the Livermead Cliff Hotel, said: "It was a pleasure to enjoy the company of those who attended the cream tea and talk over a wide range of issues that affect carers as well as others that impact on all our lives."

Kevin Dixon, Torbay LINk vice chairman, said: "Carers really appreciated the visit of Adrian Sanders.

"Adrian took time to speak to carers about many of their issues and concerns on a really lovely afternoon."
