Funding improves facilites for youths

Monday, November 17, 2008, 09:00

TORBAY Council has been given £25,000 to keep young people busy on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Government grant is part of the Youth Crime Action Plan, aimed at preventing youth crime through tough enforcement, non negotiable support and prevention.

The cash will be spent at Pendennis Youth Club, Hele, and the youth bus at Foxhole, Paignton.

It will also go towards the R-nite, held at Torbay Leisure Centre and an under-18's discos.

The R-nite for 11 to 19 year olds is held on Saturdays from 6pm to 8pm.

It offers activities including swimming, football and workshops on DJ sessions, karaoke and a monthly blade rave.

The extra cash will provide free transport and more support workers.

A council spokesman said that it intends to work with police and local businesses to ensure any under-18 disco events are well managed.

Planned ticket sales, improvements in transport to and from events and an increased police presence will minimise street disorder before and after the discos.

The spokesman said: "These events will be staffed by suitably trained and skilled practitioners ensuring the young people are provided with a quality activity in a safe environment."

Cllr Anna Tolchard, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said: "Local young people tell us they want more things to do and places to go and this funding will enable us to offer them more positive activities and tackle the minority of young people who get involved in anti-social behaviour."
