School's £90,000 fundraising mission

Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 09:10

A TORQUAY special school is on a major fundraising mission for its £90,000 play park plans.

Mayfield School is planning a play park designed for wheelchair users, complete with swings and a roundabout.

It will be the first of its kind in the Bay.

Donations totalling £30,000 have funded the first stage of its ambitious project.

Youngsters have been using new fitness trails since the summer.

Now the school is pressing ahead with the play area for more than 30 of its own wheelchair-user students and others in the Bay.

Headteacher June Palmer said: "Children in wheelchairs can watch from the sidelines but rarely get the chance to feel the excitement and sense of movement that comes with playing on the swings.

"We want the children to have a chance to play like other children can."

The plans include making a sensory garden for children with profound learning disabilities.

Mrs Palmer said: "We hope to be able to open it up outside of school hours and during the summer.

"It will be a major addition for special needs children and their families."

Mayfield School has 102 pupils with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties aged two to 19 years.

Mrs Palmer said they hope to complete the park by 2010.
