Marat/Sade, or rather less catchy 'The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of Monsieur de Sade', is a play within a play.
In the production Marquis de Sade stages scenes from the French Revolution in an insane asylum.
A spokesman explained: "The play is set in the asylum of Charenton, where the Marquis de Sade is held incarcerated.
"The Marquis, here plain Monsieur de Sade, has gathered a group of inmates together to 'show how Jean-Paul Marat died.
"It is July 13, 1808, the eve of Bastille Day, and 15 years have passed since Marat was killed in his bathtub by Charlotte Corday.
"In his play De Sade and his inmate-players portray the revolutionary times and recreate the infamous murder.
"The cast list for this production is extensive with 31 characters described. Many are inmates of the insane asylum who do not have speaking roles, some singers and musicians are required as well as the main character roles."
Director Rich Lea is about to cast the play and is keen to encourage as wide a range of actors as possible to come forward and audition.
The piece contains music and there is a certain amount of singing but Rich is keen to emphasise this should not put anyone off auditioning as 'a certain roughness is to be desired'.
If you feel inspired to take part contact Ceni on 01803 554965 and book onto a workshop audition.
These will take place tomorrow from 2pm to 4pm and on November 29 from 10am to noon at Dartington Playgoers' headquarters on the Dartington Hall Estate.
