Good news for budding filmmakers

Friday, November 21, 2008, 10:39

IT IS 'reel' good news for Torbay filmmakers as two groups receive lottery grants.

Two volunteer groups of budding filmmakers have received grants from the lottery's Awards for All Scheme to help them get started.

First Eye Productions received £6,417 to establish itself as a community filmmaking group that produces serious drama about social issues.

The chairman for First Eye Productions, Austin Hawkins, said: "The interest in filmmaking in Torbay is burgeoning and what's driving it is the new digital medium because it makes the process so much cheaper.

"The equipment itself is expensive initially and that's why this grant is so wonderful because it makes it possible for anybody to make movies with few running costs."

Torbay Film Club has been given £6,265 to present a season of independent world cinema to the community. This will include workshops and discussion groups.

Emmeline Gee, chairman of Torbay Film Club, said: "There haven't always been the venues or facilities in Torbay to bring people who are interested in the arts and culture together."

She added: "Not only will this grant help us with screening our new world season from now until May, but we can also run special events such as short film evenings for local filmmakers and a 'technical buddies scheme' to help media students get practical experience."

Torbay Film Club meets monthly in Pengelly room at Torquay Museum.

The grants are two of 52 handed out in the South West. They add to Torbay's growing reputation as a hotspot for film.

Awards for All is the small grants scheme administered on behalf of Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England.
