Singer Rosie returning with her Snapdragons

Friday, February 05, 2010, 11:20

LOVERS of top-quality folk music will be making a bee-line for the Blue Walnut in Chelston, Torquay, tomorrow night for a return performance by Rosie Doonan.

The young Yorkshire singer-songwriter played at the popular Walnut Road venue last year and won the audience over with her beautiful voice and sparky personality.

On her current tour she is joined by her band The Snapdragons, consisting of cellist Sarah Smout and violinist Katriona Gilmore.

Rosie cites influences from the Beta Band to Laura Veirs to Free, and explains: "I grew up listening to The Stones, Joni Mitchell and Free, but my roots are in the folk scene."

Her father played in folk favourites Hedgehog Pie and she grew up visiting the free festivals and soaking up the music.

A natural singer, she joined acapella group Sweet Nothings and played with them at the Albert Hall.

A Radio 2 Folk Award nominee, her most recent recording is the album, Moving On, recorded in Cumbria with producer Joss Clap.

She added: "I want as many people as possible to hear my music, because it's got a universal theme.

"At the moment, I play gigs in Wakefield and there's a big crowd because people know me.

"That's great, but the time has come to get out there and play to people who only know me through my music.

"I've put my heart and soul into the record, and I'd like to think you can hear it in the songs."
