Affordable flats for town centre 'Asda island'

Westcountry Housing Association Ltd has been granted planning permission to pull down a derelict set of seven homes in Clarendon Terrace to make way for flats.
The all-affordable development will consist of 10 one-bedroom and five two-bedroom flats surrounded by communal gardens, in the heart of the town.
The proposal was given the go-ahead by Teignbridge Council's development control committee on Monday.
Committee chairman Howard Milton said the development would create 'quite a nice' piazza in keeping with the pedestrianisation of the town centre.
He said: "It will be quite interesting to see, over the next 15 to 20 years, how this part of Newton Abbot will be developed."
The current batch of houses have been vacant for three years after being sold by the council.
A Section 106 Agreement will see Westcountry Housing Association Ltd give a £31,664 contribution to open space and recreation improvements and £6,331 for education.
