Going gets tough for Torquay's ladies

Thursday, August 28, 2008, 09:47

IT was the 36-hole Championship for Torquay's ladies on Tuesday – when the going gets tough, and physical and mental aptitude are everything (writes Diane Evitts).

For those not wishing to play two rounds, there was the LGU Pendant which, it has to be said, attracted more takers than the main competition.

The standard scratch rose to 75 for the single-round event, with only two players able to break par, namely Pauline Goodrich in the Silver Division and Elaine Ewings the Bronze on nett 73s.

Meanwhile, the SS for the championship was 73 in the morning, rising to 74 for the afternoon round.

One player who can always be relied upon to step-up to the plate is Petitor's finest lady golfer, Charlotte Dommett.

Her rounds of 74 and 73 (gross) were streets ahead of the pack to add another gold medal to her large collection of silverware.

The handicap winner was Nicole Simonetti, whose nett total of 148 was 11 shots clear of the runner-up, Maxine Adams.

If the recent weather continues in a similar vein, then the time is fast running out for players to reduce their handicaps before winter sets in.

The only trio managing to shave shots on this occasion are Pauline Goodrich, who reduced her handicap by one shot to 18, Elaine Ewings, who was cut one to 24 and Charlotte Dommett, whose round reduced her exact handicap to 2.1.+6.
