Eight jobs to go as garden centre announces closure
A long-established Torbay garden centre has announced it is closing down, with the loss of eight jobs.
Parkbay Garden Centre on Brixham Road, Paignton, has set a provisional timescale of two months before it ceases trading.
The owner, Mr John Britton, has received an offer for the six-acre site, which has planning permission for 100 homes.
A poor summer season, disruptive roadworks and difficulties in receiving loans to fund the housing project himself have fuelled Mr Britton's decision to close the business, which he has run since 2006.

The neighbouring 15-acre plot of land, owned by Cavanna Homes, is currently undergoing highway construction as part of road improvements on Brixham Road ahead of a 220-home development, due to be completed by 2018.
Torbay Council granted permission for the Cavanna project in 2010, a departure from the Torbay Local Plan, which allocated the land for employment use only.

“If they are fitting 220 homes in to that plot of land there won;t be any room for gardens; and as there won't be any work for the people living there as they will have built on land put aside for employment they wouldn't be able to afford anything anyway. What we ahould be looking at is building more homes for old people - oh, right they are already doing that in Paignton. Whta hope does Torbay have if all we do is build more houses and retirement proprties instead of investing in jobs and attempting to keep the young people here.”

“I would have thought he was in an ideal place to take advantage from the building of new houses, when finished they will probably want plants and other bits and pieces for their new homes.”
