A TWO-MAN Texas Scramble at The Warren this week was unusual enough, but what made it even more perplexing was that it was won by a team of three!

Their percentage of handicap was lowered accordingly, but this did not stop John Foster, John Seatherton and Bill Eaton passing the winning post with a four-under-par nett 63.

In second place was Howard Marsh and partner Brian Cocks with 64.6, followed closely in third by Chris Sumner and Mike Martin on 64.8.

The Wednesday Stableford proved to be a tough challenge with a very strong wind blowing straight down the course.

This kept the scoring quite low in Division One with Pete Morris edging ahead by one point from Tony Sluman with 35 points, with Dave Rookes finishing third with 33.

In Division Two, however, the scoring was better. Alan Patten, playing off 26, proved that under par could be done and came first with 38 points.

Heath McDonald took second place from Paul Speed with a better back nine after both scored 37 points.

After the hurricane force gales and rain on Friday and Saturday, it was a surprise for members to find the monthly roll-up stableford on Sunday being played on a full course.

In Division One, first place was decided by a countback with two players finishing on 37 points.

Junior Jordan Maloney took the honours with a better back nine score from Cavan Harker. Division Two was won by Neil Allum with 39 points from Roger Folley on 38 points.

● CHURSTON'S trainee greenkeeper Ashley Millar headed the field at the club's junior medal competition on Sunday.

Millar's four-under-par 66 earned him top spot in Division One, while ten-year-old Jack Fulcher finished in front in Division Two, also four-under-par, with nett 68.

Dan Nie took second in Division One with 68 on countback from Jordan McNamara, while Josh Reilly (70) and Jessica Francis (73) filled out the top three in Division Two.

This result also saw Jack take a 20-point lead in the Junior Order of Merit with just two competitions left.

In the eight-hole stableford competition, Josh Hendren finished first with 22 points, from James Bennett on 20 and Rhys Hurd on 17.

The best girls' score was Emilia Smith with 17 – one ahead of sister Maddy on 16.

In a 4BBB competition for the Smarvis Cup, Millar and Nie were tied with D Guy and H Mayers – both pairs had nett 68 – while G Horsham and M Haslam were third three strokes behind.

Despite the November storms, Churston ladies found a lull in the weather to enjoy a fun 18-hole greensomes with all 18 main greens available.

Just two points separated the first five — leaders Jo May and Lynda Joseph getting the verdict over Lesley Breyley and Lynne Constable, thanks to their better homeward run.

Brenda Rideough and Linda Brennan were third, Pat Bray and Cathy Coombe fourth on countback from Betty Gordon and Jean Barrell.

● HELE Park head professional Duncan Arnold and Stover's Jo Hicks-Beach are through to the third round of the South West of England Winter Foursomes competition.

Arnold and 2009 Devon ladies' finalist Hicks-Beach beat the Stover duo of Margaret and David Jeffs – David is now the pro at Libbaton in North Devon – 4&3 at Yelverton.

Several other South Devon duos exited the competition, including Torquay's Tom Hiscock and David Ruth; Sean Mason (Exeter) and James Brophy (Teign Valley); and Martin Ruth (Torquay) and Alan Montier (Dainton Park).

Among the other successful players through to round three are Stover's Jason Pollard, Teign Valley's Scott Amiett and Stover's Sally Hicks-Beach.

● NEARLY 40 hardy souls from the seniors' section at Dartmouth Golf & Country Club braved the gales and a soggy underfoot to compete in an individual stableford.

The conditions showed in some of the low scores that were posted.

David Rowsell won with a score of 35 points, while second went to Simon Barnes on countback from Peter Hunkin and Mike Shalders – all on 33 points.

Paul Stubbs had to settle for fifth with 31 points, while the twos money was shared between Simon Barnes and Ron Barton.
