DEVON-BASED property agents Bettesworths are celebrating double success having been recognised in two categories of the highly coveted Estates Gazette Most Active Agents Award.

The competition is highly contested within the commercial property industry and is compiled by the main industry journal The Estates Gazette.

Awards recognise agents who have achieved the highest number of transactions by property sector, region and county.

The results, which are based on volume of transactions each agent conducted during 2012, shows who is achieving success for their clients in continued difficult trading circumstances.

Despite a concentration of national and multinational firms dominating each category of the competition, Bettesworths achieved runner up spot in two categories.

Bettesworths' Leisure and Hotels department, covering pubs and inns, hotels, nightclubs and catering businesses were runners up for the number of transactions achieved across the entire South West of England, narrowly losing out to a national organisation with three offices in the region specialising in this sector.

In achieving the runners up spot, Bettesworths beat names such as Colliers International, Jones Lang Lasalle and Miller Commercial.

Bettesworths were also runners up in the category for total transactions achieved across all commercial sectors in the county of Devon in 2012.

Vanquished opposition in this category again included multinational Jones Lang Lasalle, Alder King, Savills and Christie & Co.

Matt Bettesworth, Managing Director said: "As an independent family firm we are incredibly proud of our achievement and recognition in this fiercely contested competition.

"To see our name even mentioned in the context of some of these huge organisations, let alone achieving a greater volume of transactions in the last year, is testaments to the dedication and expertise of our team."

This is not the first time Bettesworths have tasted success in this particular competition, having achieved the status of overall winner for the entire South West of England in every commercial sector in 2009.

Matt added: "The success in both categories shows how, as a company, we have managed to expand from our previously very focussed Leisure and Hotel specialisation into the wider commercial market including sectors such as office space, industrial, retail and investment, but in doing so still managing to increase our market share in the leisure sector beyond expectation!"

In the national competition, Lambert Smith Hampton, with whom Paul Bettesworth was employed before joining Bettesworths in 2007, were knocked off their perennial national top spot by Jones Lang Lasalle.

Jones Lang Lasalle merged with King Sturge in 2011, greatly increasing their national coverage.

Paul Bettesworth commented on the success in the overall deals in Devon category saying, "Ten years ago Bettesworths was not a name associated in the general commercial market, such was our specialism in the leisure industry.

"Partly due to our determination to succeed where others haven't in the most challenging of trading circumstances, we are now able to say that we are firmly established as one of the county's key agents within the general commercial sector."

On the success within the two categories of the competition director Stephen Lofthouse who heads the hotels department of Bettesworths said: "The local and national hotel market has been and continues to be very challenging since the start of the recession due to various factors and particularly the availability of mortgage finance.

"In 2012 we achieved the greatest volume of South Devon hotel transactions since the peak of the market in 2007. It remains a particularly difficult sector in which to be active, but hopefully our recognition in this competition shows that we are able to obtain results for our clients regardless of the trading environment."

2013 marks the 70th anniversary of Bettesworths, a family firm started by Bernard and Maureen Bettesworth in 1943. The founders were succeeded by their three sons Barney, Paddy and Mick and the company is now in the hands of the third generation of family directors, Matt and Paul with fellow director Stephen Lofthouse.

The directors are supported by a dedicated team based in the long established office headquarters at 29-30 Fleet Street in central Torquay.
