GREAT Britain missed out on medals in both the men's and women's team sprint at the track cycling World Cup in Kazakhstan.

Four-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy was rested from the men's team and in his absence Jason Kelly, Ross Edgar and 41-year old Jason Queally, an Olympic individual pursuit champion 11 years ago, could only place a distant seventh.

Olympic sprint champion Victoria Pendleton didn't travel to Astana, with Great Britain represented by Becky James and Jess Varnish in the women's event.

They ranked third in qualifying but were beaten narrowly by Germany in the bronze medal race as Australia, looking dangerous ahead of London Olympics, beat the Ukraine to take gold.

Varnish also missed out on a medal in the 500m time trial but underlined her good form with a personal best 34.293 seconds while Ed Clancy, recently crowned the European Omnium champion, lies seventh overall after three events, which included a first place in the flying lap.
