More than a million spectators braved cold and wet conditions to watch the once-in-a-lifetime spectacle of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee flotilla.

The record-breaking pageant sailed through the heart of the capital where jubilant crowds gathered to acknowledge the Queen's 60-year reign and celebrate the country's maritime heritage.

The number of revellers passed the expectations of organisers, who said an estimated 1.25 million people lined the banks of the Thames.

And Guinness World Records hailed the event a world record as 670 verified boats completed the pageant route to set a new milestone.

The persistent rain left performers in the pageant and the public soaked and bedraggled, but the Queen was greeted by a sea of red, white and blue as she looked out from her royal barge surrounded by her family.

She braved the rain without an umbrella and stood beneath an ornate canopy to review the flotilla from her royal barge.

One skipper of a Dunkirk "little ship", Ian Gilbert, 61, from Shepperton in Surrey, summed up the mood of the occasion, describing it as unique. He said: "This isn't going to happen again in our lifetime. I don't think anyone will put a show like this on again in our lifetime."

“Comments: 'Many of us are not monarcists', 'We're paying for all this feudal system nonsence', 'Bring on the republic', 'Vive la République - history is on our side'. Yes; somewhere sub 20% and falling want a republic. No it's not a feudal system, you are not tied to an over-lord and you have a vote, it's a Constitutinal Monarchy - and bad news for you, you'ld be paying for it what ever system we had and there is no evidence any alternative would be cheaper. We've tried a Repulic, or Commonwealth to be exact and after a few years the nation was glad to see the back of it. History is not on your side!”

“What an enjoyable 4 days of celebration for our Queen's Diamond Jubilee! The outpouring of affection and appreciation made me proud to be British! For the anti monarchists who missed the pop concert - well you missed a treat. Shame your consciences wouldn't let you watch it! Never mind you can read all about it in the papers. What do you mean, you watched it! Shameful!”

“It rained on their parade because that is what they deserve. These ponces are disgusting their wealth could really make a difference and I do not mean the tokenistic Prince Trust that encourages young people to get into debt.”

“Why do the media (particularily the BBC) talk about the queen as if she were a 6 year old. 'And look at her waving to the crowds, with a smile on her face, braving the rain, looking splendid, with her family around her, this is a special day for her, and isn't she enjoying herself'.”
