WEIGHTLIFTER David Williams has smashed his own world record after another dominant display at the BDFPA's British Single Event Championships in Lincoln.

Williams, from Torquay, was hoping to become the first man in the O55 82.5kg class to lift double his bodyweight.

The 56-year-old narrowly missed out on that astonishing feat — he weighed in slightly heavier than expected at 81.6.kg — but still managed to bench press 160kg (352lb) to win the title.

The lift broke Williams' previous record of 155kg that he set in Bradford last April, and he has now qualified to defend his crown at the BDFPA World Championships in Moscow next month.

The telephone engineer probably won't travel to Russia due to financial constraints, but he is planning to contest the European Championships in Malta in October.

Williams does the majority of his training at home, but does his extra-heavy work at Torquay's Castle Gym.
