'Bang and flash as chimney came off'

Monday, September 22, 2008, 09:17

SIXTY-FIVE year-old Ray Heath phoned the church to say she would not be able to take the first reading at Mass at her local church Sacred Heart after a car ploughed into a telegraph pole causing her chimney to fall from the roof on Sunday morning.

Ms Heath was sleeping in her bedroom at the front of the house when she was woken by 'an incredible bang and bright white flash'.

She said: "The sound I must have heard was the telegraph pole coming down and the chimneys going with it.

"The flash was so bright, I knew that it could not be lightening and then there was just silence.

"I shot out of bed and I wanted to get out to see what had happened.

"The police told me to go back inside because it was too dangerous because of the cables in the garden.

"A policeman crawled through the cables to help me in the house.

"It was pitch black because there was no power and the policeman held a torch so I could find my insurance details.

"I am so grateful that no one was hurt. It is an inconvenience for all of us here but there are people here today putting it right."
