Bovey chasing two cups on same evening

Friday, July 10, 2009, 08:45

BOVEY Tracey are going for a cup double tonight in the finals of two competitions.

The 1st XI face South Devon at Chudleigh in the final of the Teignbridge T20 competition.

Meanwhile, the 2nd XI are up against Abbotskerswell at Barton in the final of the Aaron Printers Narracott Cup.

On paper the 1st XI ought to be favourites to beat South Devon, who aren't having a great time of it in the next division down from Bovey on the league ladder.

The Narracott Cup final looks like being a close call with Abbots 1st XI the nominal favouties.

However, as Bovey defeated Barton 1st XI in the semi-finals, they are hardly rank outsiders either.

"We will go into the game with nothing to lose as Abbotts should win," said Bovey captain James Mason.

"We will just enjoy everything that goes along with the final and hope we can compete and conduct ourselves well.

"Obviously we will be fielding a younger side as the majority of our players are playing against South Devon.

"I have every faith in this crop of younger players and back them to compete against the more experienced players that Abbotts will field."

Semi-final hero Gupreet Singh is playing for the first team as is Richard Longstreet and Aaron De Young who featured heavily for Bovey in previous rounds.

Abbots don't seem too unhappy being labelled as favourites, although player-coach Mike Pugh is well aware Mason may be saying one thing for the Press and thinking something different.

"Personally, I think it will be a close call either way," said Pugh.

"Bovey are a strong club with depth to all their teams and the fact they beat Barton in the last round tells you a lot.

"What we have that could give us an edge is the number of potential match winners in our side, players who could score a 50 or take three wickets.

"It only needs one or two of them to shine, and the rest of us to do our jobs, and we are in with a great chance."

Bovey 1st XI will be going all out for victory against South Devon in the hope of working a return ticket to the county T20 finals day at North Devon next month.

"We had a great day at last year's final, even though we didn't win it," said player-coach Andy Fairbairn.

"All of us want to have another crack at the county competition, which means beating South Devon to get there.

"We won't take them for granted, but will be confident of winning if we play to our best."

South Devon are handicapped by the absence of star player Chris Metters, the Devon left-arm spinner, who is playing for the Devon Board XI against Nottinghamshire in Chris Read's benefit game at Exmouth.

South Devon captain David Knowles concedes Bovey will be expected to win, but warned them to expect a fight for the spoils.

"Bovey are our local rivals, but because they have moved on up the league this season this is our only crack at them and we intend to make the best of it," said Knowles.

"All the pressure is on Bovey, not us, and in the short version of the game anything can happen if one or two players come off.

"We were undefeated in our group games and are in the final because we deserve to be there. If Bovey take us lightly they will be making a mistake."
