Burglar told he faces jail sentence

Monday, August 11, 2008, 11:05

A MAN who broke into a hairdressing salon in Torquay and stole cash and shop equipment has been warned he faces a jail term.

At Exeter Crown Court 34-year-old Patrick Walsh pleaded guilty to burgling the Identity Hair and Beauty Salon in Tor Hill Road in April this year.

He stole £600 in cash, an iPod, hair clippers, scissors and hair products.

Walsh also admitted damaging the door of the salon and handling stolen goods from a burglary in Belgrave Road.

His not guilty pleas to two burglaries in Belgrave Road where cash jewellery, credit cards and a marriage certificate were stolen were accepted by the prosecution.

In mitigation, Ian Holloway said Walsh had only been released on parole a few months before the current offences.

He had served two years and eight months of a four year sentence and after coming out had received little assistance with his heroin problem.

He had made strides forward while behind bars but these had not been sustained in the community.

Judge Graham Cottle told Walsh of Queen Street, Torquay: "I will order a pre-sentence report which address alternatives to custody including drug rehabilitation.

"But you should not entertain the belief that you are going to get a community punishment.

"All options will be open but the most likely result is a prison sentence."
