Monday, October 20, 2008, 08:58

A NEW academic year is underway and students have been getting to grips with a new way of life during Freshers' week at South Devon College.

The week has been hailed a success with arriving pupils taking the opportunity to make new friends, get to grips with college life and learn about what's on offer at the college. This included joining some of the rapidly growing Students' Union clubs and societies.

Student liaison officer Tony Williams, said the week went well.

"The street in the main building was jam packed with market stalls and trade stands, and hosted a wide range of spectacles including live music, aerobics sessions, a Taekwondo display and a chance to challenge the Student Liaison Team to a sumo match using over sized sumo suits."

There was also an opportunity for new students to get better acquainted with a Freshers party at Rude nightclub in Torquay.

Tony said: "It was a sell out success with Rude packed to the rafters.

"The night kicked off with local band the Iconyx, South Devon College battle of the band winners 2007, really getting the crowd going.

"The staff were really accommodating to our students and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the night.

"Our aim is to make all our learners feel welcome and help them enjoy their time here, the Freshers party was definitely the best start to what promises to be a fantastic year."
