Man, 61, arrested over death of baker

Saturday, July 04, 2009, 07:00

POLICE have arrested a 61-year-old man on suspicion of manslaughter in the continuing investigation into the death of Dartmouth baker John Ford.

The man from Chislehurst in Kent is one of two men police had already said they wanted to trace after Mr Ford died under the wheels of a car in the middle of Dartmouth early on Tuesday morning.

South Devon detectives from the Major Crime Investigation Team yesterday travelled to Yeovil Police Station in Somerset where the man had voluntarily agreed to attend.

He was formally arrested on suspicion of manslaughter before being questioned.

Police expected to release him on bail yesterday evening.

Mr Ford is believed to have been lying in the road in South Embankment Dartmouth shortly after midnight when he suffered horrific injuries after he was run over by a Renault Clio car driven by a man from Totnes.

He was airlifted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter where he was found to be dead on arrival.

The four-day police investigation has centred on how 53-year-old Mr Ford ended up in the road before he was hit by the car.

Police managed to trace the two men and the dog to a boat in the harbour and then to their homes in Chislehurst.

They had already questioned one of the men before arresting and questioning the second.

A police spokesman yesterday confirmed the man being questioned at Yeovil was one of the two police had asked to come forward.

He added: "Police are still keen to talk to people in the Dartmouth area who may have seen Mr Ford who is believed to have left an address in Dartmouth at 10.30pm on Monday night.

"He is then known to have been in the area of the town centre. Police are keen to talk to anyone who may have seen him walking around the town that night.

"We are urging people to come forward so we can trace Mr Ford's final movements that night."

A post mortem examination on Mr Ford was carried out on Thursday and an inquest is likely to be opened at Exeter some time next week.
