Man suffers head injury in bank crash

A MAN suffered head injuries when his car crashed into a road sign and ended 20ft up a bank on a Torquay dual carriageway.

The motorist was taken to Torbay Hospital after the crash on Hamelin Way just before 6.30am yesterday.

Police and paramedics attended the accident which involved the demolition of a 'no U-turns' sign.

Torbay Council staff were informed of the highway damage.

A police spokesman said the injured driver was not badly hurt.

A passenger in the vehicle was also checked over, but not taken to hospital.

The road was closed briefly while the vehicle — a red Ford Ka — was recovered.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

A coach full of schoolchildren and a lorry collided just 200 yards away at the start of the afternoon rush hour later in the day.

No one was hurt in the collision which happened just past the Kerswell Gardens roundabout on the Newton Road at 4pm.

The AB Coaches vehicle collided with a small lorry as they tried to merge into single vehicle traffic on the Newton Abbot-bound carriageway.

The accident caused rush-hour delays while police took statements from both drivers at the scene.

A police spokesman said the recovery of the vehicles was expected to take an hour.
