Morris men welcome women to the ranks

Monday, April 13, 2009, 08:30

MORRIS dancers in Kingskerswell are calling for more women to take part in this traditional pastime.

The Newton Bushel morris side, which has up until now been an all-male dance troupe, has now opened the doors to women who would like to learn morris dancing.

Dancer Roy Jeeves said: "We are delighted to announce that, as from March, we are now a mixed dancing side.

"We would like to invite any ladies and men to come along and be part of this wonderful ancient tradition.

"Absolutely no previous dancing experience is necessary as we'll teach you everything. We will gladly give you a lift to our practice night too. Alternatively, come along for a chat when we are dancing out in the summer every Thursday from May until September."

Fears have been recently raised about the decline of morris dancing but this traditional dance form, which dates back to 15th century Cotswold villages, continues to flourish in the West Country.

The Newton Bushel side is much in demand over the coming months with a full programme listed on their website at www.newtonbushelmorris.org

If you are keen to give morris dancing a try, Newton Bushel will be practising every Thursday this month at the Kingskerswell Scout Hut from 8pm.
