New drive to cut speeding on Bay roads

Friday, November 20, 2009, 07:00

SIGNS warning motorists to watch out have gone up at Torbay's traffic speeding hotspots.

Torbay Council, police and the Devon and Cornwall Camera Safety Partnership are promoting speed awareness backed with enforcement in National Road Safety Week which runs from November 23 to 27.

The Think! campaign is aimed at making drivers on the Bay's busiest roads aware of their speed.

The signs will be on roads known for speeding, including: Browns Bridge Road, Newton Road to Shiphay Lane, and Teignmouth Road at Maidencombe, all in Torquay; Penwill Way, Preston Down Road, Southfield Avenue and Dartmouth Road all in Paignton; and North Boundary Road in Brixham.

Pc Chris Lancaster, police road safety officer, said: "By highlighting speed limits within Torbay we hope to ensure drivers recognise there is a need to drive appropriately and within the law."

Road safety councillor Chris Lewis said: "We hope the posters will remind motorists that, yes, they still are in a 30mph zone and prompt them to ensure their speed is within the 30mph legal limit."

Meanwhile new signs warning of a changed speed limit have gone up around Churston.

A stretch of the A3022 Brixham to Dartmouth Road between Bascombe Road at Windy Corner, and East and West Lodge at Strawberry Bends, Churston, has been reduced from a 40mph to 30mph.

The cut in the speed was agreed by councillors in June.

A council spokesman said: "The new signs have been erected and the new speed limit is in operation.

"Motorists are reminded most 30mph speed limits in urban areas are identified by the presence of street lights, removing the requirement for repeated 30mph signs.

"Temporary warning notices will be erected to advise road users of the new limit and drivers should therefore take extra care with their speed."
