Pedley has respect for promotion field

PAIGNTON skipper Mike Pedley will warn his table-topping side to be wary of Barton when the sides clash at Cricketfield Road tomorrow.

Wins over Abbotskerswell and Brixham have cemented Paignton's place at the top again after they briefly surrendered it to Braunton.

With eight games to play there's a long way to go in the promotion race for Paignton, who want to regain the Premier place they surrendered last season.

Paignton aren't exactly running away with the division, which is why every game is vital.

Pedley has a genuine respect for all the leading contenders in the promotion frame and is concerned that minor slips could come back to haunt Paignton.

"From what I have seen so far Braunton are useful, Exmouth have the best players, Heathcoat probably have the best all-round side and Cornwood are coming good now Cheema is taking wickets for them," said Pedley.

"We have got all those teams to play again and each of the games will be close affairs.

"That makes it important to make the best of games against sides like Barton, who aren't having a great season but are no mugs at all.

"The top end of Barton's batting is strong, Aqeel is a real threat with the ball and they are well led by Adam Parker, who I have a lot of time for.

"Barton's problem is their inconsistency. One week they beat Braunton, who were top at the time, then they lose to Chudleigh, who have not won a game all season.

"We aren't a good enough side to rest on our laurels against Barton and if we want to beat them we will have to work hard."

Parker wants to see an all-round improvement from his batsmen ahead of the derby clash as they were woeful at times in the defeat at Chudleigh.

"Other than Will Grainger, who was caught behind playing a forward defensive to a good ball, nine out of 10 batsmen got themselves out," said Parker.

"We were 70 for none then 80 for six and that is why we lost the game. Batsmen have to take responsibility and think about what they are doing.

"Our bowling has generally been good all season, but we did not have enough on the board against Chudleigh.

"Another 10 or 15 runs may have made a difference as they were eight down chasing 111 and only just got there. We have to think runs and bat as long as we can instead of giving wickets away."

Paignton will be without Connor Bryan, who has chipped a bone in a wrist, which means a call up for brother Luke in the attack.

Barton are minus the services of Andy McVeigh and have drafted off-spinning batsman Luke Adderley from the 2nd XI.

Paignton are away to Plymouth in the Devon Cup on Sunday and will sort their side out tomorrow night

SOUTH Devon skipper Dave Knowles wants his side to take advantage of a golden opportunity to get away from the drop zone when they visit Brixham.

Chudleigh and Brixham are a point apart in the bottom two. Then there is a 16-point gap between Brixham and South Devon, the next side up.

A win at Brixham will move South Devon at least 25 points clear and possibly more. Defeat leaves Brixham breathing down their necks.

"This is a massive game for us and I don't need to spell it out to the players just how important it is not to lose," said Knowles.

"We go straight from Brixham into a game against Chudleigh, so the season is turning critical on us.

"Our form recently hasn't been great, but there can be no excuses from now on. We have to turn it round.

"Too often this season we have been 40 for four when we have batted – and it is hard to win games from that sort of position, or even save them.

"Cornwood last week was an example of a game we lost which we could have drawn had we batted a bit more sensibly.

"We can't afford to be under any illusions just how close we are to being in trouble. Every point is vital now so we must strive for that bonus point every time and if we can't win make sure we get something for a draw."

Brixham won't be at their strongest again tomorrow as a number of key personnel are missing.

Batter John Lamswood (thigh) and keeper Richard Ward (work) are absent, as is young seamer Joe Hyde, who is working on a technical problem in the 2nd XI.

Lamswood normally keeps, when he doesn't Ward does so with both missing there is a chance for Chris Sleep to show his stuff.
