Planet is in a safe pair of hands

Tuesday, December 02, 2008, 09:26

ENGLAND goalkeeper and Chudleigh resident David James has taken time out from saving goals to help save the planet.

Self-confessed 'tree hugger' David, 38, got up close and personal with some living woodwork to mark National Tree Week, which fits in with his own work to reduce his carbon footprint.

He has recently converted his car so it runs on rapeseed oil and leaves a zero carbon footprint.

But the Portsmouth FC shot-stopper admitted that beautiful game presents a challenging to anyone trying to reduce their carbon footprint.

He said: "Unfortunately, the sport is predominantly young males playing who don't always fully appreciate what is going on.

"We do fly to most games and if not we get the bus. That is a heavy toll.

"My car conversion was based on the fact that if I could do the miles as a carbon neutral commuter I would be reducing my percentage."

He added: "I find myself in a position where there are a significant number of people following my movements.

"I have an opportunity to talk about this and using football as a tool to promote a more conscious existence.

"National Tree Week is a perfect platform to use to promote environmental concerns.

"Tree-planting is something I want to do at my house as I think it is important."
