Debenhams on The Strand, Torquay, is holding a four-day, 25 per cent sale while thousands of people poured into Marks and Spencers at The Willows to grab their share of the High Street store's one-day-only 20 per cent sale bonanza.
Linda Mullet, 45, her daughter Laura, 21, and friend Tammi Gresswell, 21, and her one-year-old daughter Poppi, made the most of the Debenhams sale, saying it was 'amazing and fantastic.'
Mum Linda, from Torquay said: "It has made it a lot easier for us to do our Christmas shopping, because money is tight at the moment.
"It isn't a question of what we have bought, it is a question of what we haven't.
"We have bought lots of presents for our partners and families."
Holidaymakers Viv Pinfold, 61, and her friend Lyn Hemming, 63, from Warwickshire, are staying in Babbacombe and enjoyed the benefits of the sales as they prepare to go on a cruise to the Caribbean.
Viv said: "It is definitely a good idea. I have spent £70 or £80 that I wouldn't have spent.
"I wouldn't have gone in Debenhams if it didn't have the sale on and I wouldn't have been interested.
"I have saved quite a bit of money and I have bought things which I wanted and needed."
Paignton pensioners, Barbara and Brian Preece saved £14 on a coat during the sale.
Barbara, 69, said: "I didn't realise the sale was on so it was an added bonus.
"I bought a coat and it was a good bargain. It was reduced from £70 to £56, so it was a good day's shopping."
But husband Brian, 70, asked: "If they can do this sale off the cuff, why can't they do this all the time?"
