Two-day blitz targets rogue Bay motorists

Monday, February 08, 2010, 09:14

MORE than 20 special constables, PCSOs and traffic officers were out in force this weekend as part of a crackdown campaign on motoring offences.

Eight motorists were issued with fixed penalties and 30 drivers were spoken to during the two-day campaign.

Chief inspector Paul Rowe, who organised the operation, said seven areas in the three town around the Bay were specifically targeted by the operation after residents complained about traffic issues.

He said the aim of the two-day blitz aimed at stopping speeding drivers, motorists who did not wear their seatbelt or were on the phone or did not have a licence or insurance.

He added: "The aim is to raise public confidence in a specific, quantifiable way. We had some success with the places we have been in.

"We've done the checks in seven different areas in Brixham, Paignton and Torquay. These areas were chosen because of problems with speed highlighted to us by the residents."

Inspector Rowe said the five areas of road safety were addressed including excess speed on 30mph roads, seat belts, use of mobile phones, driving with excess alcohol or under the influence of drugs and uninsured, untaxed vehicles.

He added: "We've spoken to 30 drivers about road safety. It has been a good result in that it made the public more aware of our work and safety on the road."
