FUNDING of £27,000 has been allocated towards the maintenance of Paignton's new Geoplay park for the coming year.

The £500,000 play area with a geological theme on Paignton Green was unveiled in April.

Cllr Alison Hernandez told a Torbay Council meeting: "It is fair and equitable. The Geoplay Park is becoming internationally renowned.

"It's a play park for the entire Bay and beyond.

"It's not something you can really compare with traditional parks in our constituencies for normal community use. It's averaging about 500 children a day in the first six months."

The park is the latest addition to the Riviera's Global Geopark, a worldwide initiative to promote geological heritage and support sustainable economic development.

The Riviera received international recognition for its rich geological, historical and cultural heritage in 2007, joining 49 other sites throughout Europe to be classed as a Geopark.

“sparro - It is a shame that drunken WOMEN use this park as well... I've seen plenty of drunken people messing around in the park when the seafront pubs close at night. Both sexes...

Anyway, it started to look in a bad state months ago when the drier weather was here.”

“So is this maintinance going to cover flaws in the construction of play areas within the park? Example sinkage of soft flooring in climbing frame area around the manhole covers raised edges are now clearly visable. Drainage problems in the zip wire section of park with inadequate drainage being put in the first place. This could be potently be a very big problem as some of equipment will need to be taken up, the area re worked with at least some drainage system put in then the ground will need to be raised in areas with further grass and protection grids laid in. Then of coarse re installation of equipment. Surprised there has not been an inspection which has covered these problems. Yes the park is worth it as it is a success. Though not all businesses have gained from it. Suggestion sort out the poor flooring and drainage installation problems before garentee for works runs out. Get the installers back in to rectify them now. Otherwise maintinance will esculate way beyond affordability.”

“Is it just me or where we told before it was built that the council tax payers of Torbay wouldn't be paying for the upkeep of this park? Or has the funding for the maintenance come from outside of the bay?”

“It is a shame that drunken men use this park as well, I saw 3 men about 2pm Wednesday, on the swings & roundabout wheel, they will mess it all up in the end. What is needs is a supervisor on site.”
